Our History

Our History William Sutton Homes has been formed from the amalgamation of William Sutton and Ridgehill Housing Associations. William Sutton’s history dates back more than a hundred years, while Ridgehill was established through a stock transfer in 1994.

Some key dates in our history are shown below:

1900

William Sutton dies leaving the modern day equivalent of £80 million to found a charitable trust to provide ‘model dwellings and houses for occupation by the poor of London and other towns and populous places in England’.

1909

Sutton Dwellings Trust’s first new homes are completed at Bethnal Green in East London.

1919

The Trust’s first surburban scheme is created at Alum Rock in Birmingham

1925

The Trust has now developed almost 2,000 homes across six sites, including the Chelsea in South West London.

1939

The Trust is housing over 32,000 people at the outbreak of the Second World War.

1955

The Miles Memorial Village for the elderly, designed by the Louis de Soissons Partnership, is built on a semi-rural site in Crownhill, Plymouth.

1971

Canterbury House, now one of William Sutton’s properties, features in Stanley Kubrick’s cult film ‘A Clockwork Orange’.

1974

William Sutton Trust benefits from grant funding under the 1974 Housing Act.

1994

Ridgehill Housing Association is formed through the large scale voluntary transfer of Hertsmere Borough Council’s homes.

2000

William Sutton Trust celebrates its centenary.

2000

Community Building Services is set up to deliver repairs and maintenance services to Ridgehill residents

2001

Aashyana, the South West’s first Asian led housing association, joins William Sutton.

2002

Harringey Council transfer 200 homes in Potters Bar to Ridgehill.

2003

William Sutton receives the highest Audit Commission rating for its services and continuous improvement

2004

Ridgehill Housing Association and Tor Homes join the newly formed William Sutton Housing Group

2004

William Sutton is selected by Stevenage Borough Council to redevelop the Stonyhall Estate.

2005

William Sutton accredited as a Charter Mark excellent customer service organisation

2005

William Sutton and Ridgehill Boards agree to amalgamate the two associations into a new William Sutton.

2006

Brighton Housing Trust, the specialist supported housing and advice housing association, joins the William Sutton Group.

2006

Affinity and William Sutton are in the top ten developing RSLs following their joint grant application to The Housing Corporation

2006

Affinity and William Sutton Groups merge to become Affinity Sutton, one of the largest housing groups in the sector.

2007

William Sutton and Ridgehill Housing Associations amalgamate to form William Sutton Homes.
