Back to school for council chairman in Letchworth
A council chairman is going back to school this week to open a new housing development. Alan Bardett, chairman of North Herts District Council, will officially open the new William Sutton Homes housing development at Principal Court in Norton Road in Letchworth at 12pm on Wednesday April 2. He will be joined by Julia Coulton, regional housing director for William Sutton Homes, and residents who will all help celebrate the official opening of the scheme, which was completed in January.
The development is built on the former site of Norton School, which closed in 2002. It has now become home to 56 houses and flats, including 42 for sale on the open market, ten for rent and four available for shared ownership.
Some of the original school buildings have been converted into flats and houses, while some have been built from scratch.
Julia said: “We’re delighted to be opening this scheme. We have had a lot of calls from local people who have been interested to see the work on the site of the former school progressing. We are really pleased that all the new properties have now been let to local residents. It has been a great partnership between ourselves and the team at North Herts District Council”
The homes have been built using sustainable wood and have secured a Very Good Eco-Homes rating. Additionally bike storage has been provided alongside car parking in order to encourage people to use a greener form of travel.
The development, which took nine months to complete, cost £1.1million, funded in part by a £360,000 from The Housing Corporation.
