Football’s coming home to Doxey
A GRASS roots football team is returning home following a six year absence after a community clubbed together to restore their old ground.
Doxey Amateur Football Team will play a homecoming game against the police at their revamped former pitch, at the Doxey Day Fete, on Saturday 19 July – with the Mayor of Stafford, Councillor Ann Edgeller dropping by to officially open the event.
Housing association, William Sutton Homes, chipped in to help upgrade the existing football field, at The Drive, in Doxey, Stafford, providing goal posts, football kits and sponsoring the Doxey Parish Annual Challenge Trophy.
The refurbished football field will now be used as a community facility – with players from the Doxey Uni B team using their skills to coach local children in the area.
Nigel Barnett, Chairman of Doxey Parish Council, said: “The team is coming back home. They played on this field for years but stopped about six years ago and then had to travel to the other end of town. The new football field looks fantastic and is going to be a brilliant community facility for the whole of Doxey. Everyone is totally enthusiastic about the project.
Margaret Walker, area housing manager for William Sutton Homes said: “We’re delighted to be able to be support this project and be involved in Doxey Day. We know the benefits that football can bring to communities and we think the revamped football field will be a fantastic facility for youngsters living in the area.
