Young soccer stars score with housing association

A young Luton football team who were given a kick-start by a local housing association are on course for honours this year.

The Crawley Green under-14s team were in Division Two of Bedfordshire’s Chiltern Youth League when they were sponsored by William Sutton Homes last year. The housing association gave them £500 to fund their team strip.

Since then the team have raised their game. In addition to winning promotion they are currently in the running for cup victory this season with a semi-final place to be decided and are competing for league honours in Division One.

The team is well-recognised locally, with many players going on to represent other teams, such as Luton Schools, Bedfordshire County and in some cases being offered places with the youth squads for Luton Town FC.

William Sutton Homes have rewarded their effort with another £800 for new strip and training equipment. Manager Ronnie Bates said: “This sponsorship really helps the club, because the lads grow at such a rate and train so hard that their kit constantly needs replacing. We are also very proud of our long-term relationship with William Sutton Homes and hope that we can make them proud to have sponsored this team.”

Sue Hopkins, regional manager of William Sutton Homes, said: “We’re delighted to be sponsoring this club. Not only does it provide first-class facilities for girls and boys of all ages to train and improve their wellbeing through football, but it’s a very family-orientated club which is located at the heart of the Luton community and encourages people to participate and socialise locally.

“We’re particularly impressed with the coaching regime, because it encourages discipline and self-respect and allows the players to develop at their own pace. Additionally coaches recognise not only sporting achievement but also good behaviour and citizenship, which are the values which make for strong communities”.

“At William Sutton Homes we are always looking for ways to help strong communities develop and this club contributes directly to that. We’re really proud of the team and all of the club members and wish the lads best of luck for the rest of the season.”
